Michael Brown, Jason Haxton – Historical Perspectives on Osteopathic Medicine: Roots in Mental Health

In this webinar MAOPS President Michael Brown, DO, will act as the moderator and ask Jason Haxton, Director of ATSU Museum of Osteopathic Medicine in Kirksville, Missouri, questions on the roots of mental health in the osteopathic profession. They will explore what psychiatry was like in the 1800s and what medications they used to treat mental illness in Osteopathic medicine’s early days. They will discuss what AT Still’s approach was to Psychiatry and his impact on mental health. Most importantly, they will discuss the basic principles of mind, body, and spirit, and when it came to be a core part of the osteopathic profession.

Learning Objectives:
• Explain what the physician learner will change in terms of competence, performance, or patient outcomes.
• Direct others to the aspects of Mind-Spirit in the definition of osteopathic healthcare by Founder A.T. Still.
• Trace the historical introduction of mental health into the overall idea of Whole Person healthcare.
• Understand the importance of the physician-patient relationship, trust, and support.

Accreditation Statements:
The Missouri Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons (MAOPS) is accredited by the American Osteopathic Association to provide osteopathic continuing medical education for physicians. MAOPS designates this program for a maximum of 1 AOA Category 1-A credits and will report CME and specialty credits commensurate with the extent of the physician’s participation.

Grievance Policy:
