Those numbers come from Oasis, a retailer in the uber-competitive fashion industry.

And the numbers were the result of a simple test. Instead of sending out regular text-based marketing emails, they sent out emails that contained a video.

Not a fancy video with high production value either. But a simple smartphone video that was less than 10 seconds long.

And when they added this video to their emails “revenue and engagement rates skyrocketed” (their words, not mine). Revenue increased 175% because of the video and engagement significantly improved too, with a 20% rise in click through rates vs. the text-only emails.

Again, this isn’t magic – it’s just how our brains work. We naturally respond to video (especially with faces). Text, not so much.

Not surprisingly, these numbers fall in line Cisco’s detaild, 38-page Visual Marketing Index report, which states that within the next 2 years, video will account for 82% of all online traffic.

Now to be clear, video shot on a smartphone will not look better than video shot on a DSLR or an expensive video camera. But that doesn’t matter, because these days smartphone video is more than good enough to get the job done.

Plus with a smartphone, you don’t need to spend $1,000+ on a camera, gear and editing software. Then spend an hour setting everything up. Then spend another hour taking the video off your camera and editing it on a computer. Then upload it somewhere. By the time you’re done, you’ve spent several hours making a video that’s maybe 2 minutes long.
